Shopping, anyone?


After settling into our lovely bed & breakfast accommodations and paying homage to President Grant with a visit to his home, we were ready to join other day trippers who thronged the six-block stretch of  Galena's Main Street.

Timothy On Main

There we found antique shops, art galleries, fudge confectionaries, and upscale clothing boutiques including this aptly named one, "Timothy On Main."

DeSoto Hotel, est. 1855

The historic DeSoto Hotel anchors the west end of Main Street.  It boasts of ghosts that roam its rooms and hallways in a popular tour that the hotel offers.  Perhaps those ghosts include Presidents Grant and Lincoln who each stayed as guests at the hotel during the 19th-century.

Main Street is fairly level, but if you venture off it, be prepared for an uphill climb!

Dirty Gurt's Burger Joynt

We ate lunch at Dirty Gurt's Burger Joynt, a diner so popular that we had a few minutes to wait before being seated.

Uncomplainingly, Tim had been a model husband all morning long,  waiting patiently on benches outside each store while Norma and I perused the aisles and then carrying our bags of shopping finds.  Still, he laughed and sitted himself in this area of Dirty Gurt's lobby as we waited to be called to our table.  

The waitress told us that the most favorite choice of burgers is the "Sarah Palin" Burger with its towering "hair-do" of onion rings.  

Tim definitely earned his delicious meal!
